Why Do Painters Love a Level 5 Drywall Finish?

Professional painters do a beautiful job painting. The painters, however, are not typically building the structure they are painting. This means that if the underlying structure has some problems, those problems may be visible even if the paint is perfect. In today’s blog article we are going to talk about the different types of drywall finishes and why level 5 finishes are most desirable for painters.

Drywall Finishes

Drywall finishes range from zero to five (0-5). Level zero has the drywall installed, but there is no tape and no mud. The highest level is five in which there are multiple layers of skim coat including covering the whole surface, and then the whole surface is sanded.

Why Painters Love Level 5 Finishes

Painters are used to coming in and fixing small blemishes on a wall or ceiling or filling nail holes. The painters are not prepared to redo an entire wall. So, if the wall does not have a great finish, either because it is a lower level drywall finish or because the drywall was inexpertly done, the final paint job may not look its best, because you will see some of the wall imperfections. This is not the fault of the painter.

A level 5 finish is like a mirror finish. It is a perfect finish to a surface. That perfect finish will translate into a perfect finish for the painting because the underlying structure has no imperfections. This is why painters love a level 5 finish.

When Is a Level 5 Finish Used

A level 5 finish is more expensive than a level 4 because level 5 requires more material, more time for successive coats to dry, and more expertise to apply compound to the whole wall, and then sand it flawlessly. Level 5 finishes are used when the requirements of the aesthetic quality of the finish are at a higher level, such as in a museum. It is not very common in residential homes.
