What to Expect From Professional Cabinet Painters
Professional painters perform considerable preparation before refinishing cabinets. If you want a polished and professional result, then there are a number of steps that have to be followed to refinish cabinets. In today’s blog article we are going to briefly go over the steps needed for refinishing cabinets.
Assessment
First, your professional painter is going to look carefully at your cabinets to see the scope of the job. Does old paint need to be scraped or sanded? How dirty are they? How many doors need removal. What kind of finish is appropriate and what does the client want? This first assessment will determine the steps needed next.
Cleaning
Cabinets need to be cleaned. This may be done with chemicals or just with sanding and scraping depending on what kind of finish is selected.
Removing Doors
Doors and hardware will need to be labelled, removed, and these doors and hardware may be finished somewhere else—either in your garage or shed or the painter’s workshop.
Sealing off the Room
Often the kitchen will be sealed off from the rest of the house to limit dust and paint or lacquer fumes from permeating the rest of the house. It really depends on the scope of the job.
Scraping and Sanding
Depending on the type of cabinets, and how they are going to be refinished, they may need some scraping or sanding before adding a new coat of anything.
Filling Holes
Holes from hardware will be filled with the appropriate material if different hardware is chosen. This filling of holes also requires a certain amount of time to dry and set.
Priming
Sometimes, cabinets need priming. It depends on the color of the old cabinetry and how they are going to be refinished. The painter will decide if this is a necessary step or if this can be skipped. Priming is often needed in cases where trim colour is going from a very dark to a very light colour, for example.
These are the basic steps for refinishing cabinets. Several coats of paint or sealant may be required. There is absolutely no doubt that you will get a better result by hiring a professional painter than by going it alone.
