Balancing Modern Paint Color Trends With Long-Term Maintenance

You may be surprised to learn that different paint colours come with different maintenance needs. Yes, not all paint colours are alike. In today’s blog article, we want to talk about the longer-term implications of choosing different paint colours.

In a nutshell, darker colours, like dark blue or red or even black are going to show dust and scuffs more easily than lighter colours. For example, if someone scratches the wall, you will see the light-coloured drywall through a purple paint a lot more easily than through a pale gray colour because of the contrast.

Very light colours, like a hard white are going to show dirt, scuffs, and fingerprints much more easily than a slightly darker colour.

What this means is that for interior paint, there is more maintenance required for the very light and very dark colours. Very light colours will need to be cleaned more often and very dark colours will need either repairs or touch-ups more often than lighter colours.

Colours are on a continuum, so it is impossible to say at what point is the colour dark enough to avoid showing every stain or light enough to avoid showing every mark. However, the good news is that neutral colours, which are the colours recommended for resale of a property, are your best bet.

Neutral colours are colours like gray, stone, and taupe, not too light and not too dark. These are the colours that most people can live with and will require the least amount of maintenance to look good for a long time.
