Why You Should Not Cheap Out on Brushes for Exterior Painting

Sometimes we think we can save ourselves a few dollars by buying cheaper equipment such as brushes for painting. However, cheap brushes are actually more expensive in the long run because they affect the coverage you get with the paint and the overall effect. In today’s blog article we want to talk about why quality brushes are worth every penny for exterior painting.

Bristles

You may not realize it, but cheap paint brushes have inferior bristles. Not only do these lesser brushes hold paint differently then better brushes, but they apply the paint differently, and the brushes do not last as long.

One of the big problems with cheap brushes is that they shed the bristles. Shedding bristles leave imperfections in the finished paint job which is visible to the eye. If you have to keep buying new brushes because yours are falling apart, then one more expensive brush is much more economic. In addition, the painter is wasting time plucking bristles off the surface he or she just painted.

Coverage

Proper coverage is important with an exterior paint project. Often your window for doing the work is limited because of weather, so it becomes extremely important to get the work done quickly and right.

Cheaper brushes will not cover the same square footage as well or as fast as a better brush. Then you have to go over the same areas a second a third time, just because of a faulty brush, in order to achieve the same coverage. This is especially important outside, where paint suffers more wear and tear than inside.

Time

The last point worth mentioning is time. If the painter has to spend time, repainting areas with less than optimal coverage, plucking bristles off the painted surface, and replacing the brushes, that adds up to a lot of wasted time. Time is money, and there is no advantage to using a cheap brush, especially for exterior paint jobs.

Professionals never use cheap brushes or equipment because they know that there are no real savings.
