Signs Your Fence Needs Repainting Before the Wood Needs Repair

Long before your fence needs obvious repair to the wood, it will need to be repainted. What many people fail to understand is that the paint protects the wood from damage, so your fence will last longer if you keep the paint that is on it in good condition.

Colour Fading

If you see a lot of colour fading on your fence, and especially uneven colours, then it is time to repaint.

Bubbling or Peeling

The fence needs repainting if you see bubbling or peeling on it. As soon as the paint has lifted off the surface, it needs repainting as soon as possible.

Time

As a rule of thumb, fences need repainting every 1-3 years, and restaining about every 3-5 years. If your fence has not been painted in 5 years, then it needs repainting no matter how it looks.

Bare Spots

Does your painted fence have bare spots, where the paint has fallen off or blown away? Then it needs repainting right away.

Rust Spots

Do you see rust spots where there are nails or screws? Then the fence needs repainting before that oxidation damages the wood underneath.

Water Bead Test

One test to see how well your fence paint is holding up is to put a few drops of water on it, and see if the water stays beaded on the surface or is absorbed. If water is absorbed, the fence needs repainting.
