How Professional Painters Prepare Drywall Before Interior Painting

How drywall is prepared by professional painters for the application of paint depends on whether it is old or new drywall and what condition it is in. In today’s blog article, we will talk about how a professional painter approaches drywall in preparation for painting.

New

If the drywall is new, the main consideration is that the dust from taping and sanding has been removed and the drywall is smooth. If needed, a little additional sanding is not out of the question.

Old

If the drywall is old, then there are several considerations.

When drywall is exceptionally dirty, sometimes it needs cleaning with something like TSP or trisodium phosphate. Cleaning removes not just dirt, but grease, and other pollutants. If there are decals like in a child’s room, those also need to be removed.

Sometimes a specific stain needs to be addressed and sealed before moving ahead.

Usually professionals will remove all the nails and repair any damage first with some kind of spackling paste. That will need sanding before proceeding. Sometimes something specific like the mounting hardware for a television might be left in place.

Next, depending on the circumstances a primer may be needed. A primer is always used over new drywall and often over old drywall as well.

We hope we have given you some ideas on what professional painters look for when assessing drywall that needs painting. There is always some work to be done to prepare the drywall, and that is how the client gets the best professional finish.
