How Professional Painters Approach Painting a Deck

Professional painters will approach a deck or other exterior paint job with a different set of eyes than the inexperienced DIYer. In today’s blog article we are going to give you some hints on what the professional painter is thinking when he or she assesses a deck.

First Look

The professional painter will first take a careful look at the deck. He or she is looking to see if the deck already has a coat of paint or stain, what colour it is, whether it needs to be power washed or scrubbed off, and whether the deck needs some repair before painting.

Repair

A painter will not mind tightening a few screws, but if your deck needs substantial repair, then he or she will recommend that you get that professional repaired before attempting to paint it.

Weather

Next is the weather. All exterior paint projects including decks require weather that is dry and above freezing. So, the painter will look at his or her schedule and the forecast, knowing that the application of paint will require at least three or four nice days.

Colour

The last thing the painter will consider is the colour of the deck and what colour or finish you want it to be. If you are painting a lighter colour over a darker one, then more coats of paint need to be applied. It is always easier to paint a darker colour over a lighter one, and the same is true for interior paint projects.

Deck painting projects and all exterior paint jobs always get a better result when you hire a professional. Professional painters have the right tools, experience, and equipment to the any paint job better and faster than you.
