How Colour Psychology Influences Mood

It is well documented that colour influences mood, although background culture does play a role. For example, white it a funeral colour in some cultures, while in others, white it uplifting and peaceful. So, when you are choosing interior wall colours in a home, one should consider the psychological implications of your choices. In today’s blog, we are going to take a brief look at some colour psychology.
Warm vs. Cool Colours
In general, in the western world, warm colours are considered vibrant and energizing. These are colours like yellows, oranges, and reds, and they are good for workspaces like offices or kitchens where we need energy to complete tasks.
Cool colours, like blues and grays, are considered calming and peaceful, and recommended for relaxation spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms. Green can be considered cool or warm depending on whether the green leans toward blue (cool) or yellow (warm).
Dark vs. Light
Usually dark colours make a room feel smaller and lighter colours make spaces feel larger. However, a dark colour can also make a room feel cozy and comfortable, and dark colours can add sophistication and drama to some spaces, like a dining room or bedroom.
One possibility is to us lighter and darker versions of the same colour throughout a space, which can give different rooms a different feel, but lends cohesion throughout the space.
Obviously, you want some cohesion in choosing colours for a space with multiple rooms. However, one can always paint just one wall a bright warm colour in a kitchen, for example, to elicit that energizing feel. So, definitely consider how the colours will work throughout a given space and consult with your professional painter for ideas.
