Does Humidity Affect Paint Adhesion on the Lower Mainland
Yes, humidity definitely affects paint adhesion on the Lower Mainland in several ways. And this is why you should select a professional painter who has good experience working on the Lower Mainland because we have special humidity problems here. Not only does the humidity affect adhesion, but it also affects curing.
There are three specific problems on the Lower Mainland that deserve some attention when painting either interior or exterior projects: humidity in the air, humidity in the surface to be painted, and the onslaught of continual rain during the fall and winter (wet) season.
Air Humidity
The humidity in the air is normal for our oceanic climate. But for painting, it means that paint is going to take a long time to dry on exterior surfaces unless it is warm outside and/or sunny. There is also the added insult of salt air in the humidity because of our proximity to the ocean. A professional painter will have the best knowledge of what paint to use to get the best results.
For interior projects, sometimes space heaters are used to keep a room warm and help the paint to dry more quickly.
Surface Humidity
Surface humidity refers to how dry the surface is. Your painter has to determine if the surface is dry enough to paint. Has drywall and mud dried sufficiently to paint? If not, you have to wait some more.
Is the surface damaged by moisture (exterior), and does it need repair before painting? This is something your painter will tell you.
Rain
Heavy rain in the fall and winter on the Lower Mainland makes it hard to do exterior projects. Your painter will look at the long-range forecast to see if it’s doable. Because outside, the surfaces need to be cleaned first, and these surfaces have to thoroughly dry before one can paint. And you cannot paint in the rain. So, there are several variables. It is possible to paint exterior projects in the winter, but it is something to be worked out with the painter.
