Benefits of Caulking Before Painting

Most professional painters will caulk before they paint. There are exceptions, but this is generally how it is done, and in today’s blog article we are going to explain why.

Please note that caulking is performed after holes have been filled and surfaces have been cleaned either interior or exterior. Painters will caulk along trim, around built-in furniture and cabinets, around windows and doors, and sometimes around floors and ceilings. Caulking may be found around backsplashes, tile, brick, stone, and anywhere that you can see a gap between building materials.

  1. Caulking seals against moisture and air flow (drafts), and is more effective under the paint.
  2. It is important to let caulking dry and set for a few days before painting on top of it. This will allow for a smoother finish to the paint.
  3. By caulking under the paint, there is a better, more professional finish to the paint coat.
  4. Caulking seals imperfections and fills gaps. It does this better underneath a coat of paint than on top of it.
  5. Paint acts as an added protective layer over caulking.

The advantages of caulking before painting can be summed up as having more integrity to the work and a better aesthetic result when the painting is finished. Sometimes DIYers do some caulking, but a professional will do a much better job, and do it a lot faster, too.
