Choosing paint colours is not always easy. And there are some key differences between your colour choices in the interior versus the exterior. Interior

No one sees your interior except your family and those you invite into your house. So, you really have a lot of freedom to paint walls any colour you want on the inside, provided that you own your home. If you rent, then that is a different story.

Assuming you own your home, then the benefits or pros of using bold colours are several. You can make your home very personalized and according to your tastes. Some people find vibrant colours to be inspiring, thought-provoking, and cheerful. Using bold or vibrant colours will allow you to follow any kind of design scheme that appeals to you.

The biggest downside to bold colours is that they are not the best choice for resale. Unless a potential buyer has exactly your taste in colour, someone viewing your home may see those bright colours as a big expense if walls need repainting to their taste. Usually for resale value, neutrals like sand or taupe or even white are a better bet.

Exterior

Even if you are a home owner, home owners’ associations (HOAs) or stratas may dictate what colours you can paint your home. So, before you paint your house exterior bright red, you may want to find out if there are colour restrictions in your area. Sometimes a house with historical value or in a certain municipality will have rules about exterior paint colour.

Then you have to weigh whether you want your house to stand out on your street. A bright exterior colour can be risky. A safer bet would be to choose a neutral colour for most of the house, and use a bolder colour for doors and/or trim.

Before choosing a bold colour, consider how long you intend to be in your house. If you plan to be there forever, then go for it. If you are planning to sell your place within five years, then you may want to limit bold choices to a few feature walls inside.
