For the DIY’er who is doing some painting at home, today we will give you some hints on how to choose paint brushes and what the different ones are for.

Quality

The first thing to know is that there is a big difference between cheap paint brushes and good quality ones. The differences are not just in how well they carry paint and apply it, but there are also some other subtle differences. For example, cheap brushes lose their bristles easily, and loose hairs or fibers sticking onto a freshly painted surface will ruin your finish.

Better quality brushes also clean up more easily and will last longer. So, do not skimp on the quality of your brushes.

2 Brushes

For interior painting, you really only need two brushes, a large wide one and a smaller angled one. The larger wider one is good for covering large areas, although these are typically done with rollers. Rollers apply paint quickly and evenly, and typically faster than with a brush, but sometimes, a brush is necessary. Rollers are not appropriate for lots of different planes or angles in a small space. Applying paint evenly with a brush takes practice and skill, so if you can accomplish it with roller, choose that.

The second smaller brush you will need is for corners, cutting in, and trim. This brush will have an angled cut and will save you a lot of time when painting near the ceiling or cutting out from corners.

Natural vs. Synthetic

Natural bristles are better for oil paints or varnishes, and synthetic bristles are better for acrylic or water-based paint. Natural bristles can give an extremely smooth finish with experience and skill. Synthetic bristles will not absorb water from anything water-based.

Good brushes can last a long time if you take care of them. So, we recommend that you clean your brushes thoroughly as soon as you’re finished painting, and let them fully dry before using them again. For this reason, having more than one set of dependable brushes is a good idea if you have a lot of painting ahead of you.
