There are different types of paint, and different types of paint finishes. The type of paint finish you choose should be based on the function of the paint, such as what kind of room it is in, and also the type of look you want. Your professional painter is the best source of information of how a paint finish will look and perform.
Here are the most common types of paint finishes, their look and function.
Eggshell
Eggshell is the flattest or most matte type of finish. It is what most people put in most rooms. Eggshell covers well and does not have a shine to it. However, it is the paint finish that is the hardest to clean.
Satin
Satin paint is slightly shinier or glossier than eggshell. It will be slightly easier to clean, and it will reflect light slightly more. Glossier paint will highlight wall imperfections more than a matte paint and it is also harder to apply flawlessly.
Glossy
Glossy paint is the most reflective surface, and it is the easiest to clean. For this reason, it is often used in “wet” rooms like kitchens and bathrooms, although some people don’t like the way it looks. It is sometimes used to achieve special effects such as on window trim. Also, the shinier the paint is, the more expensive the paint will be. Eggshell is always the least expensive option.
Other
There are other types of paint finishes such as stenciling that are for artistic effects and beyond the scope of this article. Discuss what you want with your professional painter, and he or she can advise you.
