Adding a Creative Touch to Your Interior With Accent Wall Paint

One of the ways to add some visual interest to your home’s interior is with an accent wall. And an easy way to create an accent wall is with a contrasting paint colour. In today’s blog article, we are going to talk about accent walls and how to create them.

What Is an Accent Wall?

An accent wall is one wall in a room that is slightly different than the other walls, so as to draw your eye to it. The accent wall could be the wall facing you as walk into a room, a wall that already has an accent, such as a fireplace, or a wall that you want to draw attention to, such as a wall where you will hang art.

Accent Wall Colour

There are different ways to choose an accent wall colour. You could choose a colour related to colours that are on other walls. For example, if all the other walls are gray, you could choose a much lighter or much darker gray for the accent.

You can also choose a different brighter colour. This is a little trickier because you want something pleasing to the eye and not garish. One possibility is to use some colour wheel science. For example, a colour opposite the colours on the other walls (on a colour wheel) or colour that is next to the primary colour (on a colour wheel).

For example, if all your walls are blue, colours next to blue on the colour wheel are purple on one side and green on the other. Opposite blue is orange. Any of these choices would be pleasing to the eye, but only you can decide if you want an accent that is lighter or darker. Beware of choosing a bright, saturated colour that could look harsh.

You can always discuss this with your paint contractor. And most of the major paint companies have software online that enables you to simulate making walls different colours to get an idea what they would look like in real life. The key is to first, choose the correct wall, and then, second, choose the right colour.
